'Oderus' Moody by Tyson Summers (United States)
Wednesday, May 07, 2008

Tyson created this brilliant custom for the 'Don't Cry Over Spilt VINYL' show at the Pravus Gallery in downtown Phoenix. This is Tyson's second Moody custom. His first custom, 'Worship Me' (see earlier post for images) was included in the 'Moody Idols' show at the Helen Christou Gallery at the U of L. In our opinion, 'Oderus' is the best custom he has created. 'Oderus' is a tribute to one of Tyson's favorite bands, GWAR. It's one of those pieces of art that definitely draws a crowd and evokes a lot of smiles and conversation. "Thanks Tyson", you really 'rawked' out on this one.

A graduate of the Art Institute of Dallas, Tyson is a long-time fan of late 80's and early 90's skateboard art. Tyson's art is "influenced by things that cross lines, that are edgy whether its comedy, music or artwork. I was a skater back before the 'X-Games'. Getting ready to run or fight was just how it was. I think it gave me a different way of looking at things. Anyone who is pushing limits and doing good work is special to me." That philosophy is reflected in his eclectic 'Big Art' www.tysonsummers.com site. His site constantly moves from art, to politics, to music, to a wide range of other topics of interest for his growing allegiance of friends and fans.

Tyson utilizes a wide gamut of mediums - prints, canvas, plush, skatedecks, vinyl and even auto wraps are all within the wheelhouse of materials and objects he applies his art to.

We are huge fans of everything that Tyson does. He has created a unique universe filled with interesting characters such as 4-Icze and his trademark 'One Eye Is Better Than No Eyes' Uni. Tyson is well on his way to developing Uni into a vinyl toy ... hopefully, soon.

GWAR is a satirical heavy metal musical group formed in 1985. The band is best known for their elaborate sci-fi/horror film inspired costumes; raunchy, obscene, politically incorrect; and graphic stage performances, which consist of humorous re-enactments of political and moral taboo themes. Their costumes are generally made of foam latex, styrofoam and hardened rubber. It should be noted that the costumes cover very little, with the rest of their bodies accentuated with makeup. They further their production in concert by spraying their audiences with imitation fluids. Most of the fluids are made of water and powdered food coloring which, for the most part, flakes off or washes out easily. The thicker fluids are made from a clear seaweed extract called carrageenan which is also used in ice cream and milkshakes. GWAR does not use syrups or stage blood due to the fact that they dry solid, wrecking their costumes. In concert, GWAR has been known occasionally to perform without costumes ... YIKES!
